Below is Robert O’Brien’s matte black 1980 Yamaha XS650. This striking chopper, showcased through four meticulously shot photographs, shows the passion he put into this build.
Robert’s journey with this bike began in an unconventional setting. “I built this entire chop in my fire house,” he reveals. This statement alone sets the tone for the dedication and resourcefulness that went into bringing this machine to life.

The foundation is a 1980 XS Special. However, Robert’s bike is anything but ordinary. The transformation began with the addition of a T/C Bros. hardtail, giving the bike a rigid, aggressive stance that is both classic and contemporary. The hardtail’s clean lines are complemented by the original rear fender, a nod to the bike’s heritage.

One of the standout features of this build is the custom leather seat. The intricate design not only adds a touch of elegance but also ensures a comfortable ride. It’s a perfect example of form meeting function, a theme that runs throughout this build. The tank, sourced from a Sportster, fits seamlessly into the overall aesthetic, while the handlebars from J/C Whitney provide a unique and personal touch.

“It took me two and a half months to build and it rides great,” Robert shares, highlighting the dedication and countless hours spent perfecting every detail. The matte black finish enhances the bike’s menacing look, making it a head-turner on any road.
Of course, no custom build is without its challenges. “Wiring was a bitch – 21 hours,” Robert admits. Yet, despite the difficulties, the end result is a bike that not only looks phenomenal but also performs exceptionally well. His perseverance through the wiring process is a testament to his commitment and passion for the craft.

The photographs capture the bike from various angles, each showcasing a different aspect of Robert’s meticulous work. From the sleek profile view that highlights the hardtail frame to the close-up shots of the custom seat and handlebars, every image tells a part of the story. The matte black finish contrasts beautifully with the chrome accents, creating a visual masterpiece that is both understated and bold.

“I’m ready for the next one!” Robert declares, a statement that hints at his ongoing passion and the promise of more incredible builds to come.
