This is a strange bike for me, because there are some things I really like about it, but the total package doesn’t bring those things together. I know my opinion doesn’t mean jack, but if it were my bike, the bags would be pulled down slightly and forward slightly. The tank and bars would be swapped out, probably with a Harley tank and wide bars (beach bars) and the front forks could use about a 1.5 inch shortening. And out of those things, the bars are the least important, which is weird because that’s usually the first thing i change!

Normally , I don’t comment on the stock ish bikes unless they’re standards, BUT, this one looks so comfy and practical I can’t help but like it. It may not be a real looker, but sometimes a bike like this is just what the Dr. ordered. That bike and a few hundred miles of backroads to a sweet camping/fishing spot.

Great looking bike, but lay off the tilt-shift-gen a tad! The color saturation is a little overboard and the focus area is wonky. I need more pics like the second one you got there. very nice.

Mr. Greazz. Well done, one would have to look very hard to find a nicer XS.
The whole frontend is sweet… love the bars, grips, controls! and the pipes are nice too.

Where did you find the spokes to lace the stock front hub to the 16″ stock rear hub? It”s a nice touch if you like fat baloney’s front and back which I really do! Nice job.

Wow man! Get out of my brain! This is seriously almost exactly what I’m wanting mine to look like once it’s done. The only major differences for mine will be that it’s going to have straight pipes and the tank may sit a little differently.

thanks kade, i had to make an axle (17mm), spacers, shims for the rockers to adapt the 17mm axle to the 3/4 hole in the rockers, then i had to make a mount for the front brake drum

Well…this particular bike was a bit of a mess as far as getting the jetting right because the carbs I used were 36’s and they had to be jetted down quite a bit so the needle jet, the mains as well as the pilot jets were all changed along with the needles themselves. But after about ten different combinations were tried it roared down the road like a…well yu know.

I did end up selling it a while back actually and have been missing it ever since…it will soon be time to build another!

I would be interested in a commissioned build, but at this time I am in rehab for a blown out back. So once I get better, I’ll be back in the saddle!

In reply to John Bartos. Thanks John, for the front wheel I don't know exactly, I think all the Honda 350 CB have this kind of wheel, in france it's realy easy to finf and it's not expensive, and to finish the drum work very well for a little weigth like the 650 xs.

I start with a simple sheet steal and i roll it. i made the ribs with a special tool but i don’t know the word for that in english ! after the diffent part was tig welded.

I’m loving this. The paint is fantastic, I hope I can do something half as nice myself on my 81 which is looking very similar. I am going to be running a frisco’d instigator tank from Detroit brothers. I have the same wheels and whitewalls and they look great, so I am really positive about how mine is going to turn out shortly.

hi i have a 1982 yamaha xs650 heritage special i recently removed the harness for the bike cuz it was completly shot so i bought the complete pamcopete ignition kit for the bike with the advanced rod kit i was wondering how would i install the kit n wire it up do i need to install a battery for the kit to work ?

Did you build it for a lady. To girly for me sorry and is that a tc bros hardtail they kill the game I have a set of there foward controls and I love them. I bought the carbs pre-jetted for the XS650 at Heiden tuning and remember that I changed the pilot jet (biger), main jet (biger) and main jet holder (and springs) but for what size I don't remember. (And I live under sea level so think you can not copy anyway ;-)

In reply to tammy. Tammy, I used a piece of all thread, cut in two and a piece of scrap metal. measured and cut the metal to fit across the top of the battery and drilled two holes in it. We then drilled two more holes in the bottom plate to match and fed the all thread up through the holes in the bottom plate and through the top bar. We also used some adhesive foam padding under the battery to dampen some of the vibration.

In reply to fanoboss. Its hard to tell from the pictures but only the flats of the rear fender are painted. The center ridge and the duck bill were polished out and cleared.

G’Day Denni$, An ADR is an Australian Government compliance rule (Australian Design Rule or ADR) for motor vehicles that says things like a Vehicle/Motorcycle must only make 65dB of noise at 3000rpm or must have turn signals at front and rear. In the case of Bikes, there we only two or three prior to march 1976 but after that time the Government went all out to “Protect” us from our selves and introduced dozens of them that would prevent me from doing what I have done. Hence the early Build Date for compliance so that I avoided many of them.

Has anyone built one of these, and can share pictures? I ordered a 4″ stretch & 2″ seat drop, and am looking to start sketches for fabrication, but can’t find pictures of Ardtail bikes. Anyone have a side-on shot, ideally both left & right? If I can project a side shot (90-degree) left & right on a wall, I can start to rough out my fabrication sketches, but until I know the dimensions, hard to start. 🙂

Thanks for the compliments guys. I’m not sure what stretch/ drop the hardtail is. We just set the axle plates where we wanted and went from there. The forks are 3″ or 4″ under, I can’t remember. The kicker is a Harley arm welded to the XS boss, and I handmade the pedal from a chunk of aluminum. The velocity stacks are off ebay and have a bigger ID then the carbs so we made custom rubber inserts so they fit nice and tight. Jim and Turd, you hit the nail on the head- flow and proportion are 2 of the most important things in bike building for us.

Wow what a great looking bike a pleasant change from the weld on hardtail rat bikes with no styling …can only find two faults with this bike 1 the paint missed under the tank 2 its not mine….the rake i would say is around 40deg rear looks like 2″ up 4″ back and i think it has had a lift on the front down tubes as well … well done guys and i dont care who built it they did good..nuff said

I am also very interested in the swingarm mod. A little more info would be great and/or some close up pics of the area you modified. I read a write up about someone building a dual sport on an XS platform where they relocated the swing arm was mounted where the top footpeg bolt was. Any info would be really appreciated .

I don’t know how laws are in your country but I just used a digital bicycle computer. The display just fits under the opening in the Harleyheadlight cover. Only there are no bicycle computers with always backlight on so in the dark speed is a kind of guess.

Michel: Love your bike! I ran across a photo of it while looking for a spare YZ 400 tank for an XS650 I’m building. I have an aluminum 400 tank, plus a similar seat to the one you used. It has alloy wheels and TT pipes with internal baffles. The whole idea is to end-up with a street legal replica of an American TT type flat-track racer to more or less match my “real” TT, half-mile and mile bike, a 750cc BSA that I raced in the 1960s and 1970s.

The one problem I’m having is finding a small speedo and tach. The stock instruments are way too big. Anyway, thanks for posting the article and photos. I’ll be borrowing some of your ideas for my bike.

G’Day Roger,
The bottom of the tank has been modified to allow it to sit down over the top engine mounts. There was another channel cut about 6″ long and 1″ deep to allow for clearance so you are correct. The Tyres cam from Antique Tyres in Melbourne (lots of internet time:-) ) Yes, the tail light on the side is how it was planned but the initial Certification and Registration required it centralised as it’s an ADR requirement.

G’Day Grumpy, We have a mate who has a Drag/Hot Rod chassis building business (BO Chassis & Race Cars) who did the cut & shut. The NT has a system that allows just about any thing provided you do the paper work first. You put in a submission with all of the changes you want, they agree, you build, get an engineering certification and then put it over the pits. It has to conform to the ADR’s that are relevant for it’s year of manufacture which is why it was registered as a March 1975 build, as there are no ADR’s for bikes till 1976 and even those are pretty simple. If it passes both the engineering tests (swerve through some traffic cones and a crash stop) then the Territory Government issues Certification. All pretty straight forward.

Sick build guys! I love the paint and the overall look. One question though, can you explain how you fabbed up the kicker? I’m working on a ’72 chopper resto/mod and I had the idea of using an old Harley kicker arm and welding it to the base of the original XS kicker (currently my kicker hits the right side exhaust pipe in the up position). Looks like you did the same thing with your kicker, but for different reasons. Never seen anyone else do this with their kicker. Can you explain what you did?

Update: Springs on the timing advance mechanism were too stiff, carb pilot jets were too big, and permanent magnet adapter plate had broken causing the stator to rub against the flywheel. All this was helping cause the bog down upon acceleration. She’s whole and purring now! No more pain in the ass?

In reply to Willem. two wires come from your brushes that are in your stater one is pos/ and one neg..if you have not got a green wire from your reg then i would try and see if you have a spark,[ kick it over] if no spark then ground the green wire then try again....

In reply to pete. Thanks Pete, the green comes from the rectifier in the old situation. The new regulater/rectifier doesn't seem to have a green wire connection. Can I put it on the battery or together with the brown wire I have? Or can I do without the green wire.

Cool. Though I prefer to use a winch attached to my ceiling, means I have to remove tank and seat to attach straps to frame,but I can lift to any height and remove wheels easy.

Can I just not usethe green wire? Or do I have to ground it?

Great build, the grey frame with the blue perfect!. Some times the tanks don’t fit the the bike but yours dose. The tires set it off with the white side walls. Where did you get them? Is the tire loud? I like the different stages of the pics, deffinetly looks better with the tail lights on the side. I really like the oil tank too. Thanks for the inspiration, Roger and out!

I usually think a bike with no rear fender looks unfinished, and a bike with a front fender looks overdone, BUT, this is super nice and I’d ride it any day of the week that it was above freezing here (if that ever happens again). BTW, I’m loving the ’75 B in the backround of that one pic!

Hey great build, theres so many things I like about. Choice of paint the pipes, rear fender, cut down tank,. But how did you move the swing on back three inch? I would guess you cut the wields off the whole original mounting devises that the swing arm axel goes through. Then how did you remount it back three inches, it looks as if it would be in the middle of the fram. How ever you did it I want to do it to my bike its friken awesome!! Please do tell. I,m in the process of changing a few things after a 9 month $3000 up grade last year. Roger and out . oh look up bluesgrinder on this site

Very nice bobber. looks like an 81. I like the hard tail look and soft tail ride and your mono shock is in one of three locations I am considering for my build. Is the ride soft, hard, or just right? Please give me the mono make and model or any specs you can. I weigh 190 pounds, let me know if our weights are close. Did you mod a purchased hard tail or build from scratch. Thanks for the positive comments. Glad you guys noticed the pipes and electrical containment. They are two of the coolest features of the bike. This build was never about rushing through to completion. It was meant to be therapy and enjoying the journey. I’ve had the image of this bike in my head for years and it was cool to see it come to life. I want to thank Ted for posting Woody here and I want to say thanks to all the folks that contribute to the site… much inspiration came from visits to xs650chopper. I also want to mention Jerry, he was a natural on a bike and the image of him on his XS2 was classic. The ’72 XS650 was built for him… he was like a rolling ad for the Yamaha XS!

That is nice and tight. I gotta say, the part of this bike I can’t stop staring at is the rear wheel, tire and fender. It reminds me of a traditional old school hot rod, like an old ford tudor chopped and channeled with wire wheels. It just has that sweet vibe. Love it!

Hey Glenn, I tried leaving info a few times but it keeps getting rejected – maybe because i included some links. Anyway just google XS650 wiring harnesses and you’ll find all kinds of diagrams online. It also will depend on if you are going to stay with the original points setup or go to a Pamco and PMA.

I just picked up an 81 special and plan on building pretty much the same bike. I got it for 900 and it is in excellent condition chrome and all so will be parting out stuff wont need. You mentioned the wiring on your bike which is one thing I’m going to have trouble with. Can you direct me to a place I can get a simplified drawing of how to do it? Also , in a few years I’m going to want motor rebuilt like you…obviously more power, I’d like the number of who did yours please, thanks

Workmanship is outstanding and very innovative. I would like to see a little more spit and polish on the engine (that’s me) but one of the top ten bikes I’ve seen on this site over the last couple of years. I’ve had an idea for that style tank on a 650 in my mind for a long time. Great looking job on the “hardtail” swingarm. You could probably sell that as a rolling chassis. Love the mechanical look of the pipes. What else can I say but nice bike!!!!!

Thanks Boomer. I chopped off the end of the bmx crank spindle. Then I cut the stock kicker off of the collar and welded the spindle end to that. I pretty stoked with how it came out.

Sweet bike. Overall the exact style I love, very minimal and a pain in the ass. Similar to my own bike.

The handle bars are awesome, are they just one solid bend or are they welded? How are they attached to the bike?

The tank is an awesome one of a kind.

Sure you have to deal with some childhood illnesses, we all have here….
But you’re a bit unlucky I guess, there will come a day you’re bike is troublefree.
Like the raw look of your build, the 19 inch rearwheel looks awsome.
Great tirechoise also. maybe swap the disc for a cool drumbrake, that would be great.

In reply to Jason. True, it ain't ever gonna ride like a Caddy! But I think if any body did ride that pad, it would be a challenge to stay on it! I guess you'll have to have the ol lady try it out both ways and see which way she likes best. Then you can make it so she either wants to ride with you, or not, depending on what you want, lol. I actually just sold a bobber to a guy who specifically wanted a bike with a solo seat so his ol lady wouldn't ask to ride with! HA!

In reply to El Gaucho. Had originally planned on cleaning it up but once the whole bike was together, I decided it looked better dirty.. As far as the pillion pad, Is there a front and back? I like the line of it the way it is now but as far as comfort flipping it around would probably be better. But lets face it.. That thing isn't going to be comfortable any way you turn it!!

Love it. Classic chop and well executed at that. Slick paint. Love the seat, I think this style looks way better than a springer seat. wow! first build!! incredible… i love it!! how much did it come in at? if you don’t mind me asking. i have a project that i’ve been working on for some time. got it all original. still is pretty much. re-did a lot of the wiring. never quite got it running like it used to. it runs good at high speeds, or high rpm’s. misses when i slow down.? any tips? thanks for posting…

Did you do a lower monoshock like the roadstar Yamaha or a high mount , I can’t really see but it looks pretty good to me close up pics would be nice to see the detail. But great work in my eyes def took some thinking and thats a plus with me

Would of looked better in my opinion (for what it’s worth) with an Old Skool Peanut Tank but apart from that I like it! Not a fan of the front fender either but we have to have them (By Law) here Downunder in the Land of OZ so be it!!

There is so much to love about this bike! The rephased engine for sure, and you did a superb job on the rear fender and mounting system. The frame and suspension is top notch! I’m not much of a fan of the tank and front fender, BUT, that’s stuff that’s easy to remedy. Everything else is great.

wow great bike,what a trip I like every thing about the bike but the seat, but that dont matter your the one that needs to like it. At least you can have someone ride with you. Awesome tank headlite and handle bars and I bet the more I look at it the seat will grow on me.

simple but clean. I’d ride the hell out of it. I’m doing an 18″ rear wheel on my next build as well and I’m having a hell of a time finding a vintage looking tire that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Be proud. Nice work, you and your dad. I am a artist first, second would be (currently) a welder and fabricator. 90% preparation 10% perspiration is wise.
If you have the passion, the skills of welding are of great value but like a old style camera that the operator had to be technically able, skill is nothing without vision.
I do not follow trends.
You may want to develop metal forming (sheet metal)
It is not magic, I work with simple tools and get the results I want. Self taught.

One of my favorites for sure!… Never would have thought the brown shades of the paint would look so good with the black rims & whitewalls, but it looks incredible. I’ve always loved black rims & whitewalls period.

Please, please, please, please, post a video or two!!!! videos really bring the bikes to life for the viewer!!!!!

FWIW, your rear fender is really close to the tire. There may be contact at freeway speeds if the tire expands, YMMV?
