In the world of motorcycle restoration and customization, the journey is just as important as the destination. That sentiment rings especially true for Robert Ahlholm, one of our dedicated community members, who has spent a year turning his vision for a Yamaha XS650 into reality. Robert recently sent us five pictures of his build, and although the photos may not do justice to the meticulous work put into this project, his passion for the XS650 shines through each image.

Robert’s dream began with a comprehensive plan and a bike that was ready for a new lease on life. The focus of this build was a total engine rebuild, ensuring that the heart of the motorcycle would be as strong and reliable as it was the day it first hit the road. This isn’t just about restoring the bike to its former glory; it’s about making it better than ever.

A significant upgrade in the rebuild is the “Big 5th gear.” For those unfamiliar, this modification is a popular choice among XS650 enthusiasts looking to improve highway riding capabilities, reducing engine RPMs, and allowing for a more comfortable cruising experience.

The carburetion has been enhanced with a set of vm34s, a choice that promises to give the bike a healthy boost in performance. The XS650 is known for its tunability, and with these carbs, Robert’s bike is sure to have that extra grunt that riders crave.

One of the most striking features Robert mentions is the Factory Metal Works frame. This frame is a piece of art in itself, providing a solid foundation for a custom build. The high tunnel tank that sits atop gives the bike a distinctive line and classic custom look that sets it apart from the rest.

Electrical upgrades are a must in any serious bike project, and Robert has opted for an Hhb PMA (Permanent Magnet Alternator). This modification is a common choice for those looking to convert their XS650 to a more reliable and maintenance-free charging system, a testament to the thoughtful and forward-thinking nature of this build.

Despite the less-than-perfect quality of the pictures, the dedication and effort that have gone into this nearly complete project are evident. Robert’s XS650 is shaping up to be a true testament to the builder’s skill and the enduring legacy of the Yamaha XS650 platform.

As Robert puts it, “a lot more” has gone into this bike, and we can only imagine the countless hours and decisions that have been part of this year-long endeavor. We’re eagerly anticipating the final reveal of Robert’s dream XS650 build.
