In the world of custom motorcycles, few things evoke as much nostalgia as a classic chopper built in the late ’70s. Per Norrgren’s XS650 Chopper is a prime example of this timeless craftsmanship. The pictures he sent us, captured on an old-school camera, are grainy but rich with the spirit of an era when customization was all about personal expression and mechanical ingenuity.

A Winter’s Project

Per’s journey with his XS650 Chopper began in the winter of 1978/79. The bike’s transformation from a stock Yamaha XS650 to a unique chopper is a testament to his dedication and vision. “The bike was built in the winter of 1978/79 based on the XS650,” Per recalls. The original frame was meticulously altered and converted into a hardtail, giving the bike a compact and robust appearance.

Comfort Meets Style

One of the standout features of Per’s chopper is the forward controls, which he crafted to enhance riding comfort. “Forward controls were made for a more comfortable ride,” he explains. This thoughtful modification ensures that the bike is not only stylish but also practical for longer rides.

Custom Touches

The customization didn’t stop there. Per also created a new battery box and added modest but longer fork tubes to amplify the chopper aesthetic. “Modest but longer fork tubes added to give a more chopper feel,” he notes. These modifications, while subtle, significantly contribute to the bike’s unique character.

A Seat with a Story

The seat of Per’s chopper tells a story of resilience and adaptation. After a collision with a van in the summer prior to the bike’s build, Per’s back required a more forgiving seat. “A seat with springs fitted as my back had taken a hit the previous summer after a collision with a van and I no longer could have a solid chopper style seat,” he shares. This adjustment not only made the bike rideable again but also added a layer of personal history to its design.

The Final Flourish

In a bold move that perfectly encapsulates the spirit of the ’70s chopper culture, Per painted his XS650 Chopper pink. This vibrant color choice makes the bike stand out and reflects Per’s fearless approach to customization. “Finally I painted it Pink!” he exclaims, and the result is nothing short of iconic.

A Grainy Tribute

The grainy photographs Per sent us, taken from different angles, capture the essence of his XS650 Chopper. Each image, though not crystal clear, offers a glimpse into the meticulous craftsmanship and personal touches that make this bike a true classic. The graininess of the photos adds a layer of vintage charm, reminding us of a time when building a custom chopper was as much about the journey as it was about the destination.

Per Norrgren’s XS650 Chopper is more than just a motorcycle; it’s a rolling piece of history, a testament to the creativity and resilience of its builder. We are honored to showcase this remarkable machine and celebrate the enduring legacy of the Yamaha XS650 in the world of custom motorcycles.
