Roger, the mastermind behind this incredible build, shares, “Another XS650 I built in my little shop in Kirkland, WA. A friend suggested the name for this one, and I think it fits. BRUNO THE BOBBER.” And indeed, the name suits this bike perfectly, embodying both the rugged charm and the refined details that make it a standout piece.

The foundation of BRUNO THE BOBBER is a 1971 XS-1 tank, adorned with new Yamaha tank logos, giving it a classic yet refreshed appearance.

The engine, reading just under 5,000 miles, has been upgraded from its original points system to a PAMCO electronic ignition system paired with a high-output dual fire coil.

This upgrade ensures reliable performance and a more efficient spark, making the bike not just a visual masterpiece but also a mechanical marvel.

Roger’s attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the build. “Everything has been bead blasted, and powder coated,” he explains, ensuring durability and a pristine finish.

The bike features new chrome high-flow 2×2 exhaust headers and mufflers, which not only enhance its aesthetic appeal but also deliver a sweet, throaty exhaust note.

The list of upgrades and customizations on BRUNO THE BOBBER is extensive. All seals, gaskets, and bearings have been replaced with new units, and the steering head now boasts tapered bearings instead of the stock ball bearings.

The swing arm bushings have been upgraded to bronze, replacing the original Teflon units, and the braking system now includes a Harley front brake master cylinder with stainless steel brake lines for superior stopping power.

Roger’s creativity shines through in the custom handmade elements of the bike. From the skull head tail light and license plate assembly to the surfer foot brake pedal and 8-Ball dipstick, each piece adds a unique touch to the overall design.

The electrical system, often a point of frustration for vintage bike owners, has been completely overhauled with a custom handmade wiring harness utilizing just a single fuse, making it simple, effective, and neatly out of sight.

Comfort and functionality have not been overlooked either. The bike features a new BATES style leather solo seat, high-intensity halogen headlight assembly, new shocks, brake shoes, and pads, and all new cables.

A high tensile gold link chain ensures smooth power delivery, and the center stand has been removed to maintain a clean, streamlined look.

Despite these modern touches, the bike retains its classic kick-start mechanism, and as Roger proudly notes, “This bike is a kick start bike, and fires on the first kick.”
