There’s something truly special about a build that comes from the heart. Such is the case with Mike Pecoraro’s breathtaking 1973 TX 650, a testament to his newfound passion for two-wheeled machines and the art of customization.
Mike’s journey into the world of motorcycles began relatively recently, in 2020. As he recounts, “I only started my motorcycle journey in 2020.” But what he lacked in experience, he more than made up for in enthusiasm and dedication. Within a short span, Mike had not only purchased and customized his first bike but also acquired a 2004 Sportster, which he promptly upgraded to stage 2 with his own hands.
Determined to deepen his knowledge, Mike immersed himself in the world of motorcycle mechanics. “I spent about 6 months taking online motorcycle repair courses, engine courses,” he shares. Not content with just theoretical knowledge, he also pursued practical skills, including welding. “I decided to take an in-person welding course at a local steel supply in Hackensack, New Jersey,” Mike adds, highlighting his commitment to mastering every aspect of motorcycle customization.
The TX 650 project began as someone else’s unfinished dream. Mike purchased the disassembled bike along with crates of parts, seeing potential where others might have seen chaos. With guidance from the XS650 community and his friends, Mike set out to create something truly unique.
The result is a stunning hardtail conversion featuring a TC Bros frame, adorned with a Biltwell super seat, Honda CB headlight, and a 60s Triumph rear fender. Mike’s attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the build, from the Mikuni race carbs to the various homemade components. “All work was done by me at my home shop except for paint and powder,” Mike proudly states.
One of the most challenging aspects of the build was perfecting the junction where the old frame met the TC Bros kit under the tank. Mike’s perfectionism shines through as he recalls, “I wanted it to look perfect so I spent a week welding, laying in steel, grinding and repeat.” The frame now boasts a beautiful prismatic color GT sea foam powder coat, while the tins were color-matched by a local shop.
Mike’s hard work has not gone unnoticed. “In the last couple of months, I entered her into 2 local shows and came home with first place trophies at both,” he beams. The bike’s unique aesthetic and Mike’s craftsmanship have clearly struck a chord with judges and enthusiasts alike.
But for Mike, the true reward lies in the riding experience. “The riding experience is like no other. I really feel amazing riding a bike I worked so hard to build,” he shares. It’s a sentiment that many custom builders can relate to – the profound connection between rider and machine, forged through countless hours of hard work and dedication.
Mike’s TX 650 build is more than just a beautiful motorcycle; it’s a representation of passion, perseverance, and community. As he puts it, “When I’m an old man and can’t ride anymore, I’ll still have these memories.” And what memories they are – of learning, creating, and the joy of bringing a vision to life.
With two more XS650 projects on the horizon – one to bob and one to cafe – it’s clear that Mike’s journey in the world of custom motorcycles is far from over. We can’t wait to see what he creates next.
